BigBand Appoints Chief Architect for IPTV

BigBand Networks, a company that specializes in providing infrastructure for broadband video, voice and data services, has appointed John Reister as chief architect, IPTV, in which role he will be responsible for the strategic and technical direction of the company's IPTV offerings. Reister, who will report to BigBand's CTO and EVP, Ran Oz, was previously CTO of DSL equipment provider, Copper Mountain Networks, which after a long period of decline was recently acquired by its former rival, Tut systems. (Note: Copper Mountain specialized in selling DSL access technology to competitive local exchange carriers such as NorthPoint and Covad. However, it was unable to find new customers among the incumbent telcos after the telecommunications downturn of 2000 dramatically reduced the size and the buying power of its CLEC customer base.) Reister holds a BS from Pennsylvania State University, an MS in mechanical and aerospace engineering from Princeton, and an MBA from the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School. According to BigBand, he developed several patent-pending technologies while at Copper Mountain. "IP technologies for video services play an increasingly important role in carriers' triple-play growth strategies," Oz said in a prepared statement. "BigBand Networks recognizes that potential, and we are making advances in IPTV to provide video intelligence across IP networks that enhances the scalability, the subscriber addressability and the bandwidth efficiency of IPTV roll-outs. Adding John Reister, with his expertise and passion, helps focus our vision and raise our level of commitment to IPTV customers." BigBand Networks says that it is developing a suite of applications for the scalable deployment of IPTV over multiple access networks, including fiber-to-the-node with DSL and fiber-to-the-home.
