Charter has Now Deployed over 100,000 Moxi Media Centers

--Has Begun Rolling Out Multi-Room Version of Moxi Service

Paul Allen-owned interactive TV products and services company, Digeo, says that its sister-company, MSO Charter Communications, has now deployed over 100,000 Moxi Media Centers. (Note: the Linux-based Moxi platform--which Digeo offers as a licensable reference design and whose other customers include Adelphia, Comcast, BendBroadband, Sunflower Broadband and New Wave Broadband--allows end-users to store, access and manage a variety of entertainment content, including digitally recorded TV programming, music, photos, games, and VOD titles, through a single, unified menu. The platform is notable for its interface, which has won two Emmy awards in succession, and which replaces the standard "spreadsheet" EPG interface with a so-called "cross-hairs" configuration consisting of two intersecting animated lines at right angles to each other: customers use the left and right arrow keys on their remote control to scroll through a series of options on the horizontal line--e.g. Channels, Recorded TV, Find & Record, On Demand, Pay per View, Settings, etc.; they then use the remote's up and down arrow keys to scroll through the sub-listings of the currently highlighted option, which appear as a vertical line intersecting the line of options.) According to Digeo, the Moxi platform is now available to 85% of Charter's 2.7 million-strong customer base.

On August 31st, Charter began deploying a multi-room version of the Moxi platform in St. Louis (roll-outs in other markets are expected to follow): "We've recently deployed multi-room DVR, which extends full Media Center functionality to multiple televisions, including the ability to pause and record live TV and view DVD's in the second room," Charter's corporate VP of video product management, Barbara Hedges, said in a prepared statement. "The multi-room solution networks the Charter DVR with Moxi to an extension box, using existing coaxial cable wiring within the home. Known as the Moxi Mate, the multi-room solution enables Charter customers to easily share digital content, such as recorded programs, DVD content and photos, between two televisions within the same household."
