--Viewers Can Make Donations via Red-Button Donation App
The Community Channel--a UK digital television channel which features programming that showcases charities, volunteerism, and community activities, and which last fall launched a red-button donation application to accompany its programming on the UK's Sky platform (note: in May, the channel expanded the app to include a service that allows Sky viewers to find opportunities to volunteer for good causes--see [itvt] Issue 6.04)--is teaming with Sky News, Sky Active and Channel 4 to raise money for the Niger Crisis Appeal via the donation app. This is, of course, not the first time that the three broadcasters have made the Community Channel app available to their viewers: in July, they teamed with the channel to raise money for the victims of the London terrorist bombings, and late last year they, and several other broadcasters, worked with the channel to raise over £500,000 through the app for the victims of the Asian Tsunami disaster. At last count, the app had raised £10,000 to alleviate the ongoing famine in Niger, Mali, Mauritania and Burkino Faso. The app is funded by the UK Home Office's Volunteering and Charitable Giving Unit, and was developed by Press Red. Bandwidth for the app is donated by BSkyB.
