Cox Communications has added programming from several cable networks to its advertising-driven, free VOD service, FreeZone. (Note: the latter launched in San Diego, Calif. in 2002, and was originally devoted primarily to long-format advertising; since then, however, Cox has been steadily increasing the amount of programming available on the service. The service is currently available to Cox digital customers in Orange County, Calif.; Las Vegas, Nevada; New Orleans, Louisiana; Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Omaha, Nebraska; Hampton Roads, Virginia; Connecticut; and Rhode Island; as well as in San Diego.) Cable networks now supplying programming to the service include A&E, Classic Kids, Concert TV, Discovery, Discovery Kids, DIY Network, E! On Demand, Fine Living, Food Network, HGTV, The History Channel, and the NFL Network. The service also continues to offer commercial content, such as movie trailers, music videos, and infomercials from clients of Cox's advertising sales arm, Cox Media. According to Cox's VP of product marketing and management, David Pugliese, the addition of free programming to the service is "beneficial to our advertising clients because it will increase traffic in FreeZone and the likelihood customers will find valuable information from our advertisers alongside favorites from cable networks." The expansion of FreeZone's content offering means that Cox now provides over 700 hours of VOD programming.
